Texas Holdem Poker As a Family Activity

An indication of how popular Texas Holdem poker has become is the frequency that your favorite TV shows, dramas and sitcoms, feature scenes where the characters are playing a game of Texas Holdem poker. These scenes often include all members of the family sitting around the table playing poker. This has resulted in the softening of the image of poker. Once seen as a corrupter of family values, poker has been given some measure of legitimacy as a family activity, not quite the same as a family sitting around the table playing Monopoly, but no longer a completely evil activity either.

If your family is like most families in North America and other nations around the world, it can now be reasonable to assume that you have at least a set of poker chips and a deck of playing cards for the purpose of playing Texas Holdem poker in your home. From a family perspective, home is the best place for family members of all ages to become introduced to the game of poker. If your kids are interested in learning to play poker, then it is best that they should begin by playing in a risk-free home environment under your guidance for fun with only poker chips at stake. Many professional poker players indicate that they began their poker careers playing poker at home with a trusted parent or grandparent who taught them how to play. They learned how to play in a risk-free and comfortable learning environment where their best interest was foremost in the thoughts of their teachers. As a result they have developed superior poker skills and a healthy respect for the pitfalls of playing the game.

It is also important that when your children start playing poker with their friends that this also occurs at home where you can monitor to ensure that play remains a fun activity. Including your children’s friends, with their parent’s permission of course, in your home poker activities has some significant benefits for you as a parent. Not only will you know where your children are and what they are doing but you will get to know their friends and be able to establish a rapport with them. By having the opportunity to observe the values and motivations of your children’s friends your may have better understanding of what sorts of activities your children will engage in while unsupervised in the community with their friends.

It is quite simple to begin to teach and learn to play Texas Holdem poker at home. The basic requirement is a poker chip set. Poker chip sets usually include the basic poker supplies that you require to begin playing Texas Holdem poker that is, 300 or 500 poker chips, two decks of playing cards, a dealer button and big/small blind buttons. The chip set also has a convenient carrying case that provides secure organization, storage and transportability for you poker supplies. Additional poker accessories are also available that can add to the organization and atmosphere of your home poker game. These accessories might include a timer, a poker table top and a card shuffler which is particularly useful if younger children are involved. If your children are expressing an interest learning how to play Texas Hold’em poker, then you would be well advised to take the initiative and make their poker learning a risk free, positive experience. Go out and buy the basic poker supplies that you will require to accomplish the task and set up learning environment that you control to make sure your children learn how to play poker in manner that conforms to your family values and expectations.

Is It Better to Play Poker With Automatic Shuffler or Hand Shuffle?

I can tell you that if given the choice of playing at a casino with an automatic shuffler or one that does not is a no brainer for me. I am going to choose the one with the automatic shuffler every time. The one major exception would be the WSOP in Las Vegas. During the WSOP they have hundreds of tables going at the same time at the Rio and I’m sure it’s just not cost effective to put a shuffler in everyone of those tables. You really see the difference in the speed of the game when the dealer is doing the shuffling as opposed to the automatic shuffler.

Cash Games vs. Tournies

Most casinos on the strip in Las Vegas all have the automatic shuffler for cash games. It is in the casino’s best interest to invest in the machine because it pays for itself in the long run. The bottom line is the more hands that are dealt the more rake that is going to be dropped and this is how the house makes it’s money. A lot of times I’ve noticed that when certain casinos have tournaments they don’t use the machine. At Caesar’s Palace for example, the dealers do all the shuffling even though they use the machine for the cash games. The Venetian on the other hand, uses the automatic shuffler for their tournaments. A lot of players will choose the Venetian tournaments over Caesars for this reason alone. The automatic shuffler is faster, cleaner, and just leaves no doubt that the cards are being shuffled correctly.

Hands per hour with Automatic Shuffler vs Live Dealer

Asking around most people will tell you that live dealers average somewhere between 20-25 hands per hour. Of course the faster ones may deal 30 hands an hour on average. The automatic shuffler increases that number to about 35 hands per hour. That may not sound like a lot but if you play an 8-10 session that can really add up especially over the course of a week or even a month.

Integrity of the Game

I don’t think you have to worry about this so much on the strip in Vegas, but in some smaller casinos across the country I’m not so sure. Any time you introduce the human element there are going to be mistakes and dishonesty when money is involved. Today’s computerized, automatic shufflers are programmed to shuffle the cards as random as possible. They don’t have friends at the table or certain regulars that they know will tip them better if they win a big pot. Live dealers on the other hand have these temptations everyday. It would be easy for a live dealer to manipulate the shuffle to help out certain players if they wanted to do that. Believe me it happens in certain places. Also, the machine doesn’t get distracted. It always shuffles the cards the same way. I do admit that if a dealer did have the motivation to cheat then the automatic shuffler is not going to stop them. It just makes it more difficult.

Home Games

It used to be that you were out of luck if you wanted to put in one of these high dollar machines in your own table. Reason being is because the technology is so valuable the maker wouldn’t sell you one. He would only lease them to the casinos. He knew he could make more money that way. In 2008 one entrepreneur set to build his own and he came up with a version that cost less than $500. You can read about it on CardPlayer.com here Shuffler for Home Games

In Summary

There are two main advantages for the player while playing poker with the automatic shuffler. One being that the game moves along much faster so you get to see more hands and ideally win more money. The other reason is that the automatic shuffler does a better job of shuffling the cards than a live dealer making the cards more random. If you are a dealer the more hands you deal then theoretically the more money you will make in tips since that is your primary income.

Play Poker Games Online – Become a Millionaire

Poker games online are becoming very popular, as a matter of fact, most poker players prefer playing online as opposed to in person. Even online video poker is being played more statistically than video poker in the casino! People from all around the World are finally realizing you can do all the gambling you want in the comfort of your own home and at your own pace. No more paying for airfare, outrageous hotel fees, gas (especially at over $3.00 a gallon), food, etc… Not only that it’s nearly impossible for online poker cheating to happen and in real life at the casino it definitely can happen. Why do you think all those cameras are installed in a casino? Cheating is definitely going on and even though casino owners try everything they can to prevent it, it’s impossible. There is one solution to solve the problem though. That solution is to play online poker. Online poker has turned your average Joe into the World Series of Poker winner and the World Poker Tour Winner. Take a look at the history of the World Series of Poker and you will see that half of them came from online and over half of them won an entry into the tournament by playing online poker tournaments. Online poker tournaments, especially Sit-N-Go’s can be a great source of income if you learn the secrets behind winning them over and over again.

If you don’t know about Sit-N-Go’s, let me explain. A Sit-N-Go is basically an online poker tournament where poker chips are used at the poker table instead of real money. You only risk losing the buy-in of the tournament instead of all your bankroll. The top 3 finishers out of 9 make it to the money. Third place gets 20% of the overall prize pool, second place gets 30%, and first place gets 50%. That’s a huge jump from first to third so it is best to gun for first every time instead of playing tight just to make the money. The secret behind mastering these Sit-N-Go’s is when there is around 5 player’s left in the online poker tournament. This is where all player’s start to play tight in fear of them not making it to the money. When you get down to 5 players, You MUST start playing aggressive, stealing player’s blinds and showing them who is boss. Don’t back down to ANYONE. If you play aggressive and don’t let other player’s bully you around, you will find much more poker players respecting your game and you will also notice that they will hardly EVER bluff you again. Online poker rooms definitely give you a mixture of players that play tight, loose, aggressive, maniacs, etc…These player’s are all around the world and it gives you a good learning experience and a chance to experience what the World Series of Poker or the World Poker Tour would be like when you get to play in it one day. Stick to your game, play aggressive when there is 5 player’s or fewer left, and you will be on your way to success in the online poker world.

Free Online Poker Guide to 3 Key Short Stack Satellite Play Winning Methods

In this free online poker article I want to give you a share a game example which I came across on a Bubbling satellite table. I played a couple of these last week, and I have encountered it a couple times before too.

The game was an $11 double shootout satellite for a $215 tournament. Top 2 makes the ticket and I was in 3rd. There were 2 bigger stacks and one shorter stack, and I was the shorter stack.

I had about 1500; my 2 adversaries had about 7000. Blinds were 75-150, so not much room to play for me. But my opponents were both playing super tight. This is one of the tells you have to immediately pick up on when you get close to the tickets.

This means that they are players who are most likely barely have $200 as a current bankroll, and do not want to mess anything up (since its so much for them). That’s of course what you have to take advantage of.

Getting back to the situation, my 2 opponents were super tight. They could’ve easily taken me out, but instead I stole my way up to about 3000 in about 10 minutes.

At this point when you get re-raised, be sure to fold, and let them have it. With the way the are playing, there will be many more opportunities.

The kept on avoiding me until they both caught a big hand (AA vs KQ where AA flopped a set and KQ the straight.) So they went on and knocked each other out. And I made the ticket.

Now I want to try to give you some 3 tips on how to maximize your chances when you’re attacking shorts or are a short.

1 – Always try to be aggressive. The bigger your stack, the better. Always raise the shorties Big Blind. Since they are short they can’t afford to play.

So they have the chance push or fold. They will most often fold though, since you are so aggressive and are hoping you will go battle with the bigger stacks.

2 – DO NOT battle with the bigger stacks, unless you have premium hands!

You want the money from the shorter stacks, not the bigger who can either knock you out or cripple you!

Even if you have KK and there’s an ace on the flop, FOLD! You want to kill shorties, it doesn’t matter if you ship some chips to a larger stack.

3 – When you raise the shorties, and you get reraised (all-in), don’t hesitate to call!

These shorties often fill up with frustration and will often push with any ace or medium king.

Don’t be afraid to call with 10-8, where you are often only 60-40 behind. When the short stack has less then 30% of your stack, I would call with just about anything (given the blinds represent a reasonable portion of your stack)

I hope that this article makes it a little clearer to you that being aggressive is the best way in cashing in satellites on both the cash sites as well as free online poker. Remember the minute you start tightening up and let the shorter stacks roam freely, you’re bringing problems that could be easily avoided!

Sharpen Your Poker Game With Brainwave Entrainment Music

Years ago, I played in a Friday night all girls poker game. Naturally, the radio played non-stop Top 40 tunes. And, all of my opponents talked in their obvious ‘a guy is around’ girl talk. It was absolutely the most fun I have ever had playing poker. Except for one problem, I never won. I guess that is why they kept inviting me back. I really was trying to win. Really. But, what guy can think about poker while surrounded by all of those distractions?

Whether we are at home or in the casino, the poker scene is usually the same. One distraction after another. In fact, most of our lives are spent in a state of distraction. I am distracted right now. Let’s see: I am writing this article, worrying about my email backlog, thinking about bills to pay and errands to run, there is some loud noise outside, and I am munching on a snack while the coffee is brewing. My mind is literally awhirl with all sorts of unrelated thoughts competing for center stage.

In this age of multitasking, one might think that they are being more productive when they tackle several tasks at once. But more than likely, they are not. Even today, the human brain is still only capable of thinking about one thing at a time. Should I repeat? Your mind can focus on only one thing at a time. If your thinking is scattered, then you are ultimately less productive.

When we are in our usual wide awake, active mental state, known as Beta, we are typically in a state of continuous distraction. This is also, usually, the state of mind we are in when we play poker. See the problem?

The cocktail waitress, the TV, the dog, the loudmouth – they really are not conducive to achieving peak mental poker performance. After all, poker is a mental sport. So, how can we possibly maintain the level of focus required for peak mental performance with all of those distractions bombarding us?

If you were tied for first place in the last leg of a marathon, none of those kinds of distractive thoughts would be allowed to enter your mind. If they did, you would not be tied for first for long. Why then, do we allow distractions to enter our minds at the poker table? Perhaps, there is a real simple answer – we do not know how to block them out. There are many methods for blocking distraction in order to achieve focused concentration. This article is about one called brainwave entrainment music.

Ideally, If we could induce the right amount or mix of Alpha (intuitive), or Theta (relaxed) brainwaves while we play poker, then we could block the distractions. Because, these are the brainwave states of higher concentration. We all know the importance of playing while relaxed, playing intuitively, and maintaining focus. Don’t we wish we could summon and maintain this state of mind every time we play poker?

Some music, especially that with lyrics, can be terribly distracting. While, some music can actually induce concentration. The right music can do wonders for your poker game. If you are unfamiliar with the role that music can play in concentration, then hang on. This could be as big an eye opener for you as it was for me.

Everyone is unique, so I am not going to attempt to lay down a preferred, standard music list. And, even though this is a discussion about what works for me, we all appreciate that everyones’ brains are each wired differently. So, what works for me may not work for you, and vice versa. But, this information will give you something new to think about.

The most successful forms of music for me are a few Classical, and a few New Age selections. They remarkably improve my concentration while playing poker. I have loaded the respective CD’s unto my MP3, and play them continuously during a game, online or offline. Several of the New Age selections are designed by their composers to induce certain mental states, such as increased creativity, or relaxation, or focused concentration. The process of inducing these mental states is known as brainwave entrainment.

The best brainwave entrainment effect is obtained by listening with a headset. Distractions will tend to fade away, ushering in a much desired state of focused concentration. Load your MP3 and you can use this type of music while playing live or on-line. For an effective mental prep, I will even listen while driving to a game. Then, when I arrive at the game, my poker mind is ready for ignition.

Awhile back, I played a lot of limit hold’em in a casino. My standards for play and bankroll management were rigid. This required a great deal of concentration, especially with some sessions lasting ten hours and longer. Distractions simply could not be permitted, but it was near impossible to maintain the level of focus that was needed.

Then, I discovered brainwave entrainment music. My MP3 was loaded and played my favorite selections continuously, hour after hour. I quickly learned to carry lots of extra batteries in my pocket. In the months to follow, the dealers came to know me well. They began to call me the player who never lost.

The effect of brainwave entrainment music on my concentration is simply amazing. There is no other technique that I can employ, while actually playing, that helps as well to achieve and maintain my ‘A’ game. I am certain that you will have the same experience.

Student Pay’s Off $60,000 student Loan Playing Online Poker

I thought this might be an interesting article to list since I only started this new site less that 2 weeks ago. This site is all about debt and everything that goes along with it. I barely had this thing up and going and i was getting emails from people telling me their debt stories and I have no place to put them so I figured I would add them on here until i’m ready for them so here it is:

To: whom this may concern,

I noticed you started this new site and wanted to hear about debt and all the stories people have whether good or bad. Well I have an interesting story for you not one that a lot of people would agree with but one that I did and paid off in a big way. I graduated from Ohio state in 2005 and had no idea what i wanted to do in life. I had around $60,000 in student loans and was being “killed” (sorry but I didn’t know what other word to put there) by the interest on the loans as you know many of us students are. I worked my butt off and tried to pay this down during school and didn’t have much luck with the cost of living.

So one day I was surfing around on the net and saw all these articles about online poker and I said what the heck let’s try it out, one site was offering 100% match on my deposit. Now i’m from a very religious home and gambling is not tolerated.

So here goes I deposited $800.00 it was the last of my student loan money and well I was up $500.00 in the first 10 minutes, I thought AWESOME here I go. I played for several hours and didn’t move very much that day. So the next day I woke up and played again I went UP $2500.00. I was darn near rolling over on the floor. So I figured I would go grab something to eat and came home and played again. Now i’m thinking I have issues with gambling. So I figured if I went up anymore I would quit. Well that never came I went down $600.00

On to the next day a Sunday (god’s day)hahah I thought OK i’m gonna win today. I wasn’t playing for 20 minutes and I was broke. I LOST it ALL I didn’t know what to do talk about depressed. So back to the drawing board. I started mowing lawns and was making OK money but the thrill of winning that money playing poker never left my head.

Now that everyone thinks I have a gambling problem I went on and played again FOR FREE this time and went into a FREEROLL tournament(is a tournament you can play and win small amounts of money or entries into bigger tournaments) so I play about 20 tournaments lost them all and started to give up. There was one more tournament at 9:30pm for a free entry into a big tournament. The problem was there were 2500 people playing for this. Well I played and 8 hrs later I won the tournament and I was in to the big tournament.

So the following Saturday is the big day. Well I was late by 30mins I was down big time but I was still in the tournament just sitting out every hand. 7 1/2 hours later I was the winner of $100,000.00 Yes I could not believe it and I still do not believe it but here I am today debt free of $60,000 and off to the wonderful game of life.

Till this day I have not played online poker or any type of gambling. I figured My wish was granted
